The Diversity in Wine and Spirits team attended the MIXOLOGY BAR AWARDS held in Berlin, Germany. These are the top awards of the bar industry within the German-speaking space. First presented in Berlin in 2007, the awards honor excellence in a series of categories related to the bar sector in Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. Awards are conferred for the upcoming year so that winners can celebrate their award success for the whole year. Thus the 2019 MIXOLOGY BAR AWARDS WINNERS were announced, and Berlin’s Provocateur bar snagged two awards, for “Bar Team of the Year” and “Hotel Bar of the Year.”
Bar am Steinplatz, which had won “Hotel Bar of the Year” on two previous occasions, took the award for “Bar Menu of the Year” and iconic Oliver Bert won his second award for the “Mixologist of the Year.” And as they did last year, the MIXOLOGY BAR AWARDS closed by celebrating a true great, Fatih Akerdem, who received the lifetime achievement award. Fatih is in his 28th year as Bar Manager at Westin Grand Hotel in Frankfurt.
While many companies in the wine and spirits industries shy away from entering award ceremonies because of the perception they are too self-promotional or that entry might be time-consuming, the candidates all felt that the advantages of competing for—and perhaps winning— an award far outweighed any reasons to abstain.
The awards celebrate not only the individual winners, but their entire teams, the establishments and brands they represent, which helps boosts the credibility, draw future patrons, and increase sales. Additionally these award ceremonies can help motivate staff. Over the past decade, The MIXOLOGY BAR AWARDS have become distinguished and essential awards for the bar and beverage industry in Europe.
Diversity in Wine and Spirits was honored to attend the 2019 Mixology Bar Awards in Berlin. Diversity and Inclusion begin with outreach and awareness. Many of the bar and spirit professionals who were honored come from diverse backgrounds and countries.
